Wide receiver maintains a 3.7 GPA, pursuing graduate degree
TAMPA, Nov. 21, 2024 – University of South Florida senior wide receiver Christian Helms (Seffner, Fla.) has been named a Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete.
A graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in exercise science, Helms has a 3.7 grade-point average and has been named to the USF Athletics Honor Roll and American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team multiple times. He earned his undergraduate degree in health science. Helms is a contributor on special teams for the Bulls, seeing action in all 10 games thus far on the 2024 season and in 10 last season.
Helms will be one of 23 USF seniors recognized before Saturday’s game vs. Tulsa (3:30 p.m./ESPN+) at Raymond James Stadium.
The Go Bowling Military Bowl is proud to announce the members of the fourth annual STEM Scholar-Athlete Program, recognizing some of the brightest minds competing on the gridiron in the ACC and the American Athletic Conference.
“The Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete Program honors an amazing group of young men who truly showcase what it means to be a student-athlete,” Military Bowl Foundation President & Executive Director Steve Beck said. “We are thrilled to honor this group of talented players for their success on and off the field while continually challenging themselves in the classroom.”
The Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete Program honors one football player at each university that is a member of the ACC and the American Athletic Conference – the two conferences that are represented in the Go Bowling Military Bowl college football game. These players are studying STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) subjects and/or aspire to STEM careers.
The two players whose teams compete in the 2024 Go Bowling Military Bowl will be recognized at the game, which takes place on Saturday, Dec. 28 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Kickoff is at 5:45 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on ESPN. A donation will be made in the name of these two players to their respective school’s general scholarship fund.

ABOUT USF FOOTBALL
The USF football program first took the field in 1997 and completed its 27th season in 2023 with a program-best six-game turnaround and Boca Raton Bowl victory under first-year head coach Alex Golesh. USF completed construction on a new $22 million Indoor Performance Facility in 2023 and a $340-million on-campus stadium and football operations center is slated for completion by 2027. The Bulls have posted 16 winning seasons, earned 16 All-America selections (including two consensus selections, the last coming in 2021), as well as 32 first-team all-conference honorees. USF has had 30 players selected in the NFL Draft and the Bulls have made 11 bowl game appearances (going 7-4), posting a program-record six straight appearances from 2005-2010 and making four straight bowl appearances from 2015-18. USF posted back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2016 and 2017, logging a program-record 11-2 mark in 2016, while finishing both seasons ranked in the Top 25. USF spent a program-record 20 straight weeks ranked in the Top 25 during the 2016 and 2017 campaigns and reached as high as No. 2 in the Associated Press rankings during the 2007 season.
