USF Falls at No. 4 Clemson, 3-0

The Bulls, who looked to snap the Tigers’ 28-match home winning streak, return home on Friday against Stetson.

CLEMSON, S.C. (Sept. 6, 2021) – The University of South Florida men’s soccer team closed out its short two-match road stretch on Monday night with a disappointing 3-0 loss to No. 4 Clemson at Historic Riggs Field. The Bulls fall to 1-2-1 on the year while the Tigers, traditionally one of the top teams in collegiate soccer, improve to 4-0.

South Florida came out of the gate quickly and gave Clemson some trouble in the early going, holding a 5-3 shot advantage into the 20’ minute of play. The Tigers, however, got on the board first in the 30’ minute when Ousmane Sylla dribbled between two South Florida defenders and fired a right-footed shot from 19 yards out to the far-left post, and past the Bulls’ goalkeeper Kazuna Takase (Tomoto, Japan).

Clemson took the momentum, the lead, and evened the shots total up at seven-all entering the locker room at the break.

The Tigers came out in the second half and struck quickly, just seven minutes into the stanza. Oskar Agren took a loose ball in the box, off a corner kick, and drove it past Ralph Montero (Miami, Fla.) who started the second half in net for the Bulls, to make the score 2-0.

Clemson added an insurance goal in the 84’ when Mohamed Seye got past a South Florida defender and beat Montero.

Gabrielle Privitera (Ciudad Ojeda, Venezuela) had the Bulls’ best chance of the night to get on the board, in the 86’, when his shot off the outside of his right foot from five yards out to the near post went just wide of the net.

The Tigers ended the match with a slight 14-13 advantage in shots.

Takase and Montero each recorded two saves on the night.

Quotable …

“It was a tough result tonight in a pretty even match. We just lacked some quality and maturity in key moments and that was the difference.” – USF Head Coach Bob Butehorn
