The Seahawks scored in the 94’ to hand the Bulls their first loss of the season.
TAMPA (Aug. 29, 2021) – The University of South Florida men’s soccer team battled for over 90 minutes on Sunday, however, in the end, it was UNCW that found a way to get the ball in the back of the net while handing the Bulls their first loss of the year, 1-0, in overtime at Corbett Stadium.
South Florida falls to 1-1 on the year while the Seahawks improve to 2-0.
UNCW’s Omar Aboutaleb was on the receiving end of a pass from Michael Hornsby, and beat the Bulls’ goalkeeper, Ralph Montero (Miami, Fla.), with the golden goal in the 94’ of play. It was Aboutaleb’s only shot of the night. Montero finished with two saves in his second career start.
South Florida had numerous opportunities to get on the board but just couldn’t capitalize.
Henrique Gallina (Atibaia, Brazil), who had a five-point (2g, 1a) night in the season-opener against Jacksonville on Thursday night, seemed to have gotten the Bulls on the board in the 15’ when he got the ball past the Seahawks’ keeper, Gabriel Perrotta, from 10 yards out, however, Gallina was slightly offsides and the goal was disallowed.
Brian Schaefer (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) also had a prime opportunity with just over five minutes remaining in the first half when he found the ball on his foot from five years out. Shaefer, however, was unable to get a clean attempt off on the net due to the congestion in the box.
In the second half, Nicolas Scargle (Clearwater, Fla.) took a perfectly placed offering from Gabrielle Privitera (Ciudad Ojeda, Venezuela), off of one of South Florida’s 10 corner kicks, and sent his shot just inches to the right of the post in the 50’. Then, just seven minutes later, Gallina made another bid to get on the board with an unsuccessful blast.
Gallina and Segun Afolabi (Austell, Ga.) led the Bulls with two shots apiece on the night.
