USF Defeats Houston in Series Opener

Senior Lindsey Devitt went 3-for-3 in USF’s 4-2 defeat of Houston on Friday night at Cougar softball Stadium

HOUSTON, March 29, 2019 – Senior Lindsey Devitt went 3-for-3 In a back-and-forth matchup between the Bulls and the Cougars, USF scored three unanswered runs with a pair of homers to take down Houston, 4-2, at Cougar Softball Stadium on Friday night.

USF (24-14, 2-2) jumped ahead in the first inning with three straight hits including a pair of doubles from freshman Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) and senior Lindsey Devitt (Jacksonville, Fla.) and an RBI single from senior Macy Cook (Uniontown, Ohio).

Houston (24-10, 2-2) responded in the bottom of the second with a solo shot over the left field fence to tie up the game. Sophomore Georgina Corrick retired eight straight batters before the Cougars took a 2-1 lead with another solo homer.

Junior AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) batted in two in the fifth inning for a 3-2 lead. The center fielder smashed a ball over the right field fence but was not credited with a home run when she accidentally passed freshman Dezarae Maldonado (Winter Park, Fla.) who waited to be sure the ball would not be caught. Devitt added to the Bulls’ lead in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run to center field for a 4-2 lead that the Bulls would never lose.

Corrick recorded her 13th victory, fanned eight batters and pitched her seventh complete game of the season. She didn’t walk a single batter and limited the Cougars to four hits.
