The USF product is the first MLB All-Star in program history.
TAMPA (July 18, 2022) – University of South Florida product Shane McClanahan has been named the American League starting pitcher for the 2022 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the league announced on Monday.
The 2022 MLB All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, July 19 at 8 p.m. ET at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
McClanahan, in just his second full season in the big leagues, was selected to his first All-Star Game and is the first MLB All-Star in South Florida program history. McClanahan was named to the All-Star Team after a league-wide vote among his peers and finished with the most votes by any pitcher in the American League.
The southpaw leads MLB in ERA (1.71) and WHIP (0.80), is tied for the AL lead in strikeouts (147) and tied for second in wins (10).
McClanahan was drafted in the first round (31st overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2018 MLB Draft and has had a meteoric rise. In 2020, he became the first pitcher in MLB history to make his debut in the postseason (pitching in the World Series), was the Rays’ game one postseason starter in 2021 and made the opening day start for Tampa Bay in 2022.
