USF Baseball defeats FAMU on the road, 3-1

Jack Cebert struck out five over 3.1 IP and earned the win out of the bullpen on Tuesday.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 19, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls went on the road for just the 10th time this season and came back with a 3-1 win at Florida A&M on Tuesday evening. South Florida improves to 21-16 with the victory and FAMU falls to 16-22.

The American Athletic Conference’s leader in hits, Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) went 3-for-5 to improve his season tally to 59. Lane is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak and has eight multi-hit efforts in that span. The redshirt sophomore leads USF with 18 multi-hit games this year, including 10 games with three hits or more.

Lane led off the game with a double, but was stranded and the game remained scoreless over the first two innings. In the top of the third, Keanu Jacobs-Guishard (Philipsburg, St. Maarten) also tallied a leadoff double and came around to score on an RBI-double by Jackson Mayo (St. Johns). Mayo would later score on a two-out single by Joaquin Monque (Weston) to give the Bulls a 2-0 advantage.

That lead was plenty for the USF pitching staff which collusively turned in a gem. The Bulls stuck out 11 FAMU Rattlers, issued just one walk and allowed four hits on the night.

Senior Joseph Sanchez (Miami) made the start on the mound and turned in three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Jack Cebert (Tampa) was next with five strikeouts over 3.1 IP. The freshman was the winning pitcher in the game and improved to 2-2 this season.

Austin Grause (Tampa), Nolan Hudi (Safety Harbor) and Hunter Mink (Palm Habro) combined to blank the Rattlers over the final 2.2 IP. Mink earned his seventh save of the year.

Mayo finished the game with a pair of RBI as the freshman drove in the Bulls’ final run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth frame. Fellow rookie Marcus Broil (Dunedin) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
