TAMPA, JULY 11, 2019 – The USF baseball program adds another big leaguer, while a former first-round selection is living up to the expectations in this week’s edition of Bulls in the Pros.

Shane Shutting Down the Opposition
2018 first round selection of the Tampa Bay Rays, lefty hurler Shane McClanahan has thrived pitching in the Sunshine State since being called up to the Charlotte Stone Crabs (A-Advanced) earlier in the season. McClanahan is 4-0 with a 0.31 ERA and 32 strikeouts to just four walks in four starts. He has struck out six in each of his last two appearances, surrendering just five combined hits and one walk.

Herget Gets his Chance

Righty Jimmy Herget had been slowly rising through the Cincinnati Reds’ organization since being selected in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. Herget had a 3.58 ERA with 44 strikeouts and a pair of saves with the Louisville Bats (AAA) this year and was rewarded for his hard work with the call-up in early July. He made his MLB debut on July 7 against the Indians, becoming the third former USF arm to pitch in the majors this season.

Genord Named New York-Penn League Player of the Week
First baseman Joe Genord has been bashing since he began his professional career with the Brooklyn Cyclones (A-Short Season, NY Mets). Genord was named the New York-Penn League Player of the Week on July 9 after generating fireworks during 4th of July week. He hit .333 last week with two home runs, five runs scored and 11 RBI. He went off on July 2 with a 2-for-4 night, a homer and five RBI. Genord followed with three hits, another homer and three RBI the next day. He’s batting .282 in 22 games this season with five home runs and 19 RBI.

Quack Earns PCL All-Star Nod

Righty Kevin Quackenbush has been solid out of the bullpen with the Oklahoma City Dodgers (AAA) this season. He has a 2.93 ERA and five saves in 35 appearances. Quackenbush has 61 strikeouts and just nine walks in 40 innings of work. He was named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team and competed in the Triple-A All-Star game on Wednesday. Though he didn’t pitch, he did see action as a pinch hitter. Quackenbush has had a nice career playing in the Dodgers, Padres and Reds organizations since 2011. He made his MLB debut with San Diego on April 25, 2014. In 279 career games in the minors, Quackenbush is 24-10 with a 1.87 ERA and 106 saves with 408 strikeouts.
