TAMPA, FEB. 20, 2025 – University of South Florida baseball (2-2; 0-0 AAC) will hit the road for the first time in the 2025 season this weekend with a three-game series at Georgia Southern (3-1; 0-0 Sun Belt). The Bulls head to Georgia Southern following a 6-2 loss to No. 9 Florida State on Tuesday before a sellout crowd at USF Baseball Stadium. USF will duplicate its 2025 season-opening series pitching rotation, sending Corey Braun (Friday), James Hill (Saturday) and Jorge DeCardenas (Sunday) to the mound.
USF opened their 60th season, and first under Mitch Hannahs, with a series win over Iowa. The Bulls won the opener 5-4 over the Hawkeyes last Friday. Iowa took the second game 8-2. In the series finale, USF took a first inning lead for the third straight game and clinched the series with a 9-5 win.
Setting The Stage:
The series in Statesboro, Ga. will be the Bulls only road series in the next month and the only road non-conference series of the season. The Bulls will also play a road date at FGCU on March 5. USF has upcoming home series vs. UCF (Feb. 28-March 2), Villanova (March 7-9) and Maryland (March 14-16) and mid-week home dates vs. FIU (Feb. 25) and FGCU (March 18) before opening conference play on March 21 with a three-game series at UAB.
Series History:
The Bulls and Eagles have only met twice, with the Bulls the winner in both contests. The first meeting came on May 11, 1980, in the Sunbelt Conference Tournament, an 8-2 USF win. The Bulls won the most recent meeting 12-8 on March 14, 1988, on the Eagles home field in Statesboro, Ga.
Note-A-Bull:
Against Florida State, USF starter Bryce Archie pitched three scoreless innings, giving up three hits while striking out four with one walk. Archie recorded strike outs with runners on base to end the second and third innings.
Ryan Pruitt continued his hot start to the season against the Seminoles. Pruitt drove in the Bulls only run, his team-high sixth RBI of the season. Pruitt was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll after he went 5-for-9 (.556) with two home runs, including a grand slam with five RBI in the opening series.
Hannahs at the Helm:
Mitch Hannahs was named South Florida’s eighth head coach in program history on June 8, 2024, after compiling 355 wins over 11 seasons at Indiana State. The 2023 ABCA NCAA DI Midwest Region Coach of the Year guided the Sycamores to six conference titles and five NCAA Regionals, guiding ISU to a spot in the 2023 NCAA Super Regional.
