Asekol, Mazza-Downie, Khan and Valby acknowledged for their performance at conference meet.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Following the Florida Gators performance at the SEC Cross Country Championships on Friday, October 27th, four members are being acknowledged by the conference for their performances at the meet.
A total of 36 student-athletes earned All-SEC honors, and nine SEC schools had at least one student-athlete who received recognition.
The first team for each gender included the top-seven finishers (1-7), the second team consisted of the next seven finishers (8-14) and the top seven freshman finishers were awarded with All-Freshman honors.
Parker Valby and Flomena Asekol were named to All-SEC First Team for their placement in the top seven runners in the Women’s 8k Championship. Valby placed first by a margin of 33.8 seconds and recorded a time of 18:37.5. Asekol finished fourth and crossed the finish line in 19:31.9 and did so by slowly overtaking her opponents as she started the race in thirteenth, made her way to eighth and finally reached her fourth-place finish.
In her Florida Gators debut, Amelia Mazza-Downie was honored as an All-SEC Second Team member after her eighth place finish. The Melbourne, Australia native ended the race with a mark of 19:56.7.
The final Gator to get acknowledged by the Southeastern Conference was Parvej Khan as he was dubbed an All-SEC Freshman as he was the sixth freshman to cross the finish line in the Men’s 8k Championship. Khan, competing in his first ever Cross Country race and making his collegiate debut, placed 34th overall and completing the race in 24:22.8.
UPCOMING ACTION
The Florida Gators will next compete in Gainesville as they play host to the NCAA Cross Country South Regional on Friday, November 10th at Mark Bostick Golf Course. Both the men’s and women’s teams are set to participate and will partake in a 10k and 6k respectively.
