The Gators Close Out at Auburn Open
The final day of the Auburn Open has come to an end for the Florida Gators. The team tallied an additional four wins, totaling fourteen victories in Alabama.
AUBURN, AL – Florida tennis completed their time in Auburn, Alabama, finishing the fall tournament with fourteen wins. In the singles category, there were ten overall wins, and in doubles, there were four.
Head coach Roland Thronqvist comments on the past three days and what the future holds, “Great weekend of matches for us. Not sure we learned a lot about our doubles but we certainly got tougher in singles. As the fall winds down, it’s becoming apparent that we have an even-strength team and our work over Christmas break will most likely help craft our lineup vs Baylor.”
Those competing in Auburn for the Gators were: Carly Briggs, Bente Spee, Qavia Lopez, Mawina Rowinska, Sara Dahlstrom, and Sophie Williams. All six Gators competed in both the singles and doubles draw at Auburn. Coach Thornqvist changed the doubles pairings each day of the tournament, testing different duos for the upcoming spring season.
Sophie Williams secured the most victories for Florida during her time in Alabama, totaling two singles wins and three doubles. On day two Williams defeated Ali DeSpain/Ava Esposito Cogan (AUBURN) 6-2 with partner Bente Spee. On days one and three she defeated Danielle Alamo/Kate Zink (PENN ST) 6-2, and Rachel Krzyzak/Reka Zadori (OLE MISS) 6-4 with partner Malwina Rowinska.
Florida will be back on the courts this weekend competing at the UNF Invitational in Jacksonville. The tournament will begin on Friday with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. The tournament page can be found here and on the Gators 2023-24 schedule.
