UF WTN: Gators Conclude Day Two in Chapel Hill with a Doubles Sweep

Florida Tennis had another challenging day on the 2023 National Champions home courts. However, the team held strong picking up wins in both the singles and doubles draw.

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Day two of the Kitty Harrison Invitational comes to a close for Roland Thornqvist and his team after battling several top ranked opponents.

The Invitational was especially challenging for Rachel Gailis facing fifth ranked Reese Brantmeier (UNC) and Bente Spee taking on 50th ranked Sofia Johnson (ODU) in the singles draw. Both Gailis and Spee forced their opponents into a third set, proving their level of determination and grit.

It was freshman Qavia Lopez and junior Emily De Oliveira who got the job done today in the singles draw. Lopez had a three set thriller after losing the first set 6-3 to Wisconsin’s Xinyu Cai, she battled back to take the second 7-5, and closed out with a 6-1 win in the third. De Oliveira had a clearer path to victory, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 against Penn State’s Olivia Dorner.

On the doubles side of the draw, the Gators swept all three courts today. Briggs and Gailis defeated Vanderbilt’s Staff/Ray duo 8-5, and freshman power team Qavia Lopez and Malwina Lopez got the job done with an 8-1 victory. Bente Spee and Sophie Williams won by default after their opponents withdrew from the tournament.
