UF WGOLF | Gators Fall in SEC Championship Quarterfinals

Florida dropped its match 4-1 to Texas A&M on Saturday.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Florida women’s golf team fell in the SEC Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday, falling 4-1 to No. 3 Texas A&M.

The Aggies took a quick 2-0 lead after taking points in the No. 1 and 2 spots. Marian Escobar (No. 1) was 4-down at the turn and responded winning the next three straight holes to make it one-hole deficit, but Zoe Slaughter pushed back out to take the point.

Maisie Filler scored the lone point for the Gators with a 1 Up victory over Jennie Park. The two battled on the first nine with each trading a one-shot lead. Filler found momentum at the turn with two straight wins on holes 1 and 2. The two would half 10 holes in their match as Filler improves to 2-2 all-time in SEC Championship match play.

In the No. 4 spot, Jackie Lucena nearly tied the match as she was 2-down with two holes remaining. The senior won the second last hole to make it a one-shot advantage, but the Aggies’ Hailee Cooper clinched the match from the No. 5 spot with a 3&2 win.

The Gators will now wait to learn its NCAA Regional selection on April 26th with the selection show live on Golf Channel at 1 p.m. There are six pre-determined regional sites, which include Athens, Ga., Westfield, Ind., Pullman, Wash., Raleigh, N.C., San Antonio, Texas and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
