GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Tuesday evening marks the start of the 2021-22 campaign for Florida women’s basketball as Sun Belt-foe, Georgia State, makes their way to Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
Opening tip is with the Panthers is slated for 5 p.m. ET and the game will be streamed live on SEC Network+ with Kyle Crooks and Brittany Davis on the call. The men’s season opener against Elon will follow at 8 p.m. ET.
Tuesday will mark the 10th meeting between the Gators and Panthers, with Georgia State currently holding a 5-4 advantage, with all five wins coming in 1980 or prior. The Blue & Orange have won the previous two games, most recently defeating GSU, 82-66, on Nov. 11, 2017.
Over the past decade, the women’s basketball squad has found success in season-openers, holding a 7-3 record during that span. In the 2020-21 season, UF defeated Grambling State, 90-47, to open the year.
Florida fans received their first glimpse of the Gators in an exhibition matchup with Flagler last Friday evening, a game in which UF crossed the century-mark for a 101-56 victory. Freshman Alberte Rimdal was quick to impress, tallying a game-high 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including four triples. Fellow newcomers, Zippy Broughton and Taliyah Wyche, each added 16 points for the Gators.
Controlling every facet of the game, the Gators wasted no time in establishing a post presence, using five-straight field goals in the paint to open the game. They ended the night with a 62-14 advantage in points in the pant while also out-rebounding the Saints, 55-29.
Defensively, Florida forced 22 turnovers while recording 14 steals of their own. Veteran playmaker Kiara Smith led defensive charge with four steals, in addition to eight points, six rebounds and six assists on no turnovers. Flagler ended the evening shooting just 16-of-54 (29.6%) from the field.
Following the season opener with Georgia State, the Gators will head to Raleigh, N.C., for the Preseason WNIT from Nov. 12-15 where they will meet Towson, North Carolina State and Wofford.
