UF T&F: Ramirez Santana Wins Silver, Chang Places Sixth at Pan American Games

Duo of new Gators represent their home countries in Santiago, Chile.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida Gators Rosa Angelica Ramirez Santana and Kai Chang, who are both new to the Track & Field program this season, represented their home countries in the 2023 Pan American Championships.

Ramirez Santana, a transfer from the University of Nevada – Las Vegas (UNLV), participated in the women’s shot put Thursday evening, an event in which she had great success during the 2023 NCAA Track & Field season. The San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic native was the Mountain West Conference Indoor shot put champion and outdoor silver medalist. Additionally, she was crowned the shot put bronze medalist in both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships.

In Thursday’s action Ramirez Santana earned the silver medal in the women’s shot put with a mark of 17.99m (59’0.25″).

Three days prior, Kai Chang, who comes from the University of the West Indies, participated in the men’s discus throw. He represented his home country of Jamaica in the contest.

Competing in the discus throw, Chang’s toss of 59.96m (196’9″) was good for sixth place overall. This adds to Chang’s resume of international success as he was named the 2021 NACAC U23 Champion and the 2018 U20 World Champion in the discus throw.
