Grant Holloway earns his third World Championship title in the men’s 110m hurdles while Talitha Diggs proceeds to final in the women’s 400m.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Day three of the 2023 World Athletics Championships may have started a little later than the first two days of competition but was still packed with action from current and former Florida Gators.
Three athletes participated in four events on Monday afternoon. Will Claye competed in the men’s triple jump final, Talitha Diggs ran the women’s 400m and Grant Holloway recorded finishes in the men’s 110m hurdles semi-final and final.
Here are the headlines from Monday, August 21.
HOLLOWAY REMAINS ON TOP
After earning the top qualifying time in the preliminary round, 2019 Bowerman winner Grant Holloway was set to compete in the 110m hurdles semi-finals on Monday.
Just as he had done the day prior, Holloway earned the top spot in the semi-final round. He crossed the finish line in 13.02.
An hour later, with a spot on the podium in his sights, Holloway earned a 2023 World Athletics Championship gold medal. He did so in dominating fashion as he recorded his fastest time of season at 12.96 seconds.
With this win, Holloway has now recorded three consecutive 110m world titles: 2019 in Doha, 2022 in Eugene and now 2023 in Budapest.
He is just the second male athlete to twin three World 110m Hurdles Championships in the forty years the World Championships have been held.
DIGGS TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Racing in the second of three semi-final heats, Talitha Diggs automatically qualified for the 400m final with a second-place finish in said heat.
The two-time NCAA Champion and 2022 World Championship Gold Medalist (4x400m relay) found another gear during her race Monday. In the final 100m Diggs surpassed multiple athletes to claim the qualifying spot.
She will compete in the 400m final on Wednesday, August 23 at 3:35 p.m. ET.
CLAYE FINISHES WITH SEASON BEST
Participating in his seventh outdoor World Championship, Will Claye completed the men’s triple jump with a seventh-place finish and season best jump of 16.99m (55’8.90″).
