UF TF: Athletes Associated with Florida Conclude Successful Trip to 2023 World Championships

The congregate of current and former Gators as well as athletes that train in Gainesville earned, or contributed towards, seven medals and nine additional top ten finishes.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 2023 Track & Field World Championships concluded Sunday after nine continuous days of competition. Current and former Florida Gators, as well as athletes that train in Gainesville, participated in all nine days of competition, taking part in 23 events over that span.

The group of athletes earned, or contributed towards, seven medals and sixteen top ten finishes as they were challenged by the best talent in the entire world in their respective events.

MEDALS BREAKDOWN

Of the seven total medals earned by the set of nineteen athletes associated with Florida, four were gold, two were silver and one was bronze.

The sole individual gold medal earned by the group was Grant Holloway who placed first in the men’s 110m hurdles. This was Holloway’s third consecutive World Championships gold medal in the event. Holloway is the second male athlete to win three 110m hurdles World Championships in the forty years the competition has been held.

The remaining gold medals came in the relay variety. Current Gator Ryan Willie contributed to the United States gold medal in the mixed 4x400m relay by helping the team to the top qualifying time of the preliminary round.

Athletes Trevor Bassitt and Quincy Hall, who both train in Gainesville, aided Team USA in their eventual gold medal in the men’s 4x400m relay. Bassitt helped the team qualify while Hall participated in the dominating finals victory. This was the ninth world men’s 4×400

The first of two silver medals earned during the more than week long competition was won by Anna Hall in the women’s heptathlon. Hall placed second just a year after winning bronze at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Hall became just the second American woman to win multiple world medals at the World Championships in the heptathlon.

The second was earned by nineteen-year-old Erriyon Knighton, who trains at the University of Florida. Knighton earned silver in the men’s 200m and, just like Hall, has done so after having earned a bronze medal in the event at the 2022 World Championships.

Along with his gold medal from the 4x400m, Quincy Hall obtained an individual medal as well as he placed third in the men’s 400m.

TOP 10 FINISHES BREAKDOWN

The batch of athletes also totaled nine additional top ten finishes while in Budapest.

Current Gators Talitha Diggs, Jasmine Moore and Jevaughn Powell accounted for three of these finishes. Diggs placed eighth in the women’s 400m while Moore finished tenth in the women’s long jump. Powell helped Team Jamaica qualify for the men’s 4x400m final where they eventually placed fourth.

Former Gators Will Claye, Joseph Fahnbulleh, Cory McGee and Hakim Sani Brown tallied five more top ten placements. Claye placed seventh in the men’s triple jump, Fahnbulleh finished ninth in the men’s 200m and McGee concluded the women’s 1500m in tenth.

Sani Brown totaled two top ten finishes, one individual and one team. He crossed the finish line in sixth in the men’s 100m, and helped Team Japan to a fifth-place finish in the men’s 4x100m.

In addition to his performance in the 4×400, Bassitt also recorded an individual sixth place finish in the men’s 400m hurdles.
