Julian Smith, Leonardo Garcia, Cameron Abaqueta, and Zoe Dixon all earn conference honors.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 4/8 ranked Florida Gators Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving secured four weekly conference honors, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. Julian Smith was named SEC Men’s Swimmer of the Week, Leonardo Garcia earned co-SEC Diver of the Week, while Cameron Abaqueta and Zoe Dixon were named Freshmen of the Week.
Smith won all four events he competed in during last week’s meet against FAU, including a 19.98 time in the 50 free, and a 48.08 in the 100 fly. The St. Augustine, Florida native was also a member of the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams that took first. It was the first weekly conference honor for Smith in his career.
Garcia flirted with history last Friday, scoring a career-best 437.33 in the 3-meter dive, which was just three points away from the school record. He also posted a 334.20 in the 1-meter in his first action this season.
Abaqueta took first in the 100 back, posting the only sub-50 second time of the meet at 49.95, and was second in the 200 medley relay. The Davidson, N.C. product is the third Gator to win SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week this season (Liendo, Savickas).
For the second time this season, Dixon earned SEC Women’s Freshman of the Week after securing a B-cut in the 200 back with a time of 1:56.41. The Henrico, Virginia native also finished second in the 400 IM and 200 medley relay.
The Gators continue the 2022-23 season this week against Florida State on Friday (swimming and diving) and Saturday (diving). The swim meet takes place in Ocala, while the diving will be hosted at the O’Connell Center.
