Canadian record holder Joshua Liendo won three medals at the 2022 FINA World Championships
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – One of the most touted recruits in recent history will be donning ‘Gators’ on his cap next season.
The Florida swim and dive team officially announced the addition of Canadian Olympian Joshua Liendo. The 19-year-old comes to Gainesville with four years of eligibility.
Liendo, a Scarborough, Canada native who spent some of his youth in Trinidad & Tobago, is a twelve-time international medalist, including a stretch of recent success, consisting of a gold medal in the 100m fly at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Liendo also added a bronze medal in the 4x100m free relay in Birmingham, while earning silver in the 4x100m mixed free relay and bronzes in the 100m free and 100m fly at the 2022 FINA World Championships last June.
Liendo competed in the 50m and 100m free, as well as the 100m fly individually at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and was a member of the 4x100m free relay team that narrowly missed the podium but set the Canadian national record (3:10.82) with Liendo splitting 47.51 on the second leg while also competing on the 4x100m medley relay team that finished seventh. He finished 18th in the 50m free (22.03), 14th in the 100m free (48.19), and 11th in the 100m fly (51.50).
Swimming Canada’s Male Junior Swimmer of the Year in 2019 and 2021, Liendo first competed at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, swimming on Canada’s 4x100m medley relay team that placed 10th. He then competed at the World Jr Championships in Budapest, securing three medals, winning silver in the 100 free (49.17) and bronzes in the 4x100m medley relay and mixed 4x100m medley relay, swimming the fly in both.
