Freshman right-handed pitcher Ava Brown earned her first SEC Freshman of the Week Award after an accomplished week both at the plate and in the circle.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Ava Brown was awarded league office Monday afternoon this week’s Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.
Brown (6-0) helped lead the Gators (15-2) to a 7-1 record this past and contributed significantly both at the plate and in the circle. The Montgomery, Texas native tallied a pair of complete-game shutout victories to remain undefeated in the circle and overall hurled 11 scoreless innings through five appearances.
She currently leads SEC pitchers, with a minimum 20 innings pitched, with an outstanding 0.22 ERA and has held opposing batters to a .099 average at the plate. The right-hander even made her bid for a perfect game in the Gators contest against Colgate, where she retired the first 10 batters she faced and tied her season-high in strikeouts with five, but the Raiders were able to piece together a pair of singles in the final frame of the run-rule victory.
Offensively, Brown notched a .429 average (6-for-14) with seven RBI, four runs scored, a double, a home run and three walks. She tallied a season-high four RBI in the Gators game one victory at North Florida earlier this week where she also launched her second home run of the season.
This is Brown’s first SEC Freshman of the Week honor and it’s the third consecutive SEC Freshman of the Week for the Florida program as fellow freshmen pitchers Keagan Rothrock and Olivia Miller have both earned the award.
It’s the first time since 2015 that three different UF freshmen have won the award with Kayli Kvistad, Aleshia Ocasio and Nicole DeWitt receiving the honor, and it’s the first time in program history that three different freshmen pitchers have claimed the accolade.
