GAINESVILLE, Fla. – For the third straight season, Ricky Castillo has been named to the Preseason Fred Haskins Award Watch List, the Golf Channel and Golfweek announced Friday.
Celebrating its 52nd year, the Fred Haskins Award is presented annually to the most outstanding male collegiate golfer in the United States. Named after Fred Haskins, who was a former golf teaching professional at the Country Club of Columbus. The winner of the oldest individual college golf award is announced at the end of each season based on the votes of media members, coaches, and select peers.
Last season Castillo earned a spot on the final watch list behind an impressive sophomore campaign leading the team with the lowest scoring average (71.06), birdies (115), and eagles (5). Appearing in all 10 tournaments, his late-round heroics in the NCAA Cle Elum Regionals were astronomical in the Gators final push to qualify for Championship play. He qualified individually for the final day at the NCAA Championship, finishing 12th overall. He rounded out the season posting a team-high 16 rounds under-par and a team-low 64 in the final round at the Gator Invitational.
The junior was also recently named the No. 3 preseason collegiate male player by GolfChannel.com along with the Gators ranked 8th as a team. Castillo concluded last season earning multiple honors – PING All-American Honorable Mention, Second Team All-SEC and PING All-Region Team.
Florida begins the season at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational on Sept. 17.
