John Axelsen and Ricky Castillo are among 15 athletes named to the prestigious watch list.
ORLANDO, Fla. -Junior John Axelsen and freshman Ricky Castillo have been named to the first Spring Haskins Award Watch List, Golf Channel announced Friday.
The Haskins Award is considered the most prestigious award in collegiate golf, and is presented annually to the most outstanding male golfer. The winner of the award is voted on by a select group of media members, coaches and peers and will be announced in early June.
Axelsen has been a consistent presence on Florida’s roster dating back to the first tournament of the season. Over seven events, the junior has notched six top-15 finishes, including placing in the top-3 on three occasions. Axelsen currently boasts a 70.26 adjusted scoring average and is listed as the No. 8 collegiate player in Golfstat’s Division I player rankings.
In his inaugural season as a Gator, Castillo has been unstoppable. Through 21 rounds of collegiate competition Castillo has posted a 70.1 scoring average and has finished inside the top 25 individually in every event.
Additionally, Castillo opened his spring season with back-to-back individual titles, claiming the crown at the Sea Best Invitational and VyStar Gators Invitational by a combined 11 strokes. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native then followed those performances with an impressive 5-under 211 at Southern Highlands Collegiate to tie for sixth. Through his nine rounds this spring, Castillo has shot a collective 26 under with a scoring average of 67.78.
Axelsen and Castillo’s collegiate seasons continue on Saturday, March 21 as the Florida men’s golf team is set to compete in the Tar Heel Collegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C.
