Calathes was Player of the Game in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament final
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida’s Nick Calathes (2007-09) helped the Greece men’s basketball team to an Olympics bid, clinching the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament they hosted with an 80-69 win vs. Croatia in Sunday’s final in Piraeus.
Calathes averaged 10.0 points, 10.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game in helping Greece to a 4-0 mark in the event, including 14 points to earn Player of the Game honors in Sunday’s championship (highlights<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woa-Gp2wvbk>).
A two-time All-SEC player at Florida, Calathes has been competing on Greece’s senior national team since 2009 and will become the first Florida men’s basketball alum to appear in the Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament. Calathes will be one of two Florida men’s basketball alumni at the Paris Olympics, as Canyon Barry will represent the USA in 3×3 men’s basketball.
Calathes scored 1,170 points in two seasons with the Gators and holds the top two single-season assists totals in program history (231 in 2008-09; 221 in 2007-08).
