UF LAX: No. 5 Florida Falls to No. 18 James Madison 17-16 in Charlotte Nail-Biter

Frannie Hahn tallied 10 points in the loss, tying freshman records for most goals (7) and points (10) in a game in program history.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 5 Florida lacrosse team (3-2, 0-0 Big 12) nearly erased a seven goal fourth quarter defecit, coming up just short, losing by a score of 17-16 against No. 18 James Madison (4-1, 0-0 AAC) on Saturday afternoon.

UF trailed by as many as eight goals, outscoring the Dukes 6-1 in the fourth quarter. The game featured three ties and four lead changes, but with the Gators trailing 17-16 in the final minute, Gianna Monaco’s shot was saved by Adanya Moyer to seal the win for James Madison.

The Gators were led by the young duo of Frannie Hahn and Clark Hamilton, who combined for 15 of the teams 23 points. Hahn led the team with seven goals and three assists on the day, along with five goals from Hamilton. Hahn’s 10 points tied the UF freshman record, set in 2010 by Ashley Bruns and her seven goals tied a freshman record of seven goals, last done by Emma LoPinto in 2022.

Overall, five different Gators scored and seven recorded a point. Kaitlyn Davies tallied two goals and an assist, Gianna Monaco registered one goal and an assist, rounded out by Cate Isaacson who had a solo goal. Gabby Greene and Gabbi Koury dished out an assist each.

How It Happened
First Quarter

  *   The Gators struck first for the fourth time this season, as Koury fed Hahn around the crease where she came around and put the ball in the back of the net, to make it 1-0 with 14:24 remaining.
  *   The Dukes responded with four consecutive goals in a 3:18 time frame to give them a 4-1 lead with 9:06 to play. UF then answered with three straight goals from Davies (8:00), Hamilton (7:35) and Hahn (2:28) to even up the score at 4-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter

  *   The Gators claimed their second lead of the day with 13:44 remaining in the second, as Hahn scored her third of the game off a feed from Koury to go up 5-4. The Dukes answered with five consecutive goals in the next 11:12, to regain a 9-5 lead.
  *   The two squads tallied a goal each in the final 2:32, as Hahn corralled her fourth goal of the game. UF went into half trailing 10-6.
Third Quarter

  *   Olivia Matthews scored three straight goals to start the third quarter for the Dukes, as they expanded their lead to 13-6 with 10:59 to play.
  *   Hamilton stopped the run with a goal at the 9:52 mark, before JMU scored two straight giving them a 15-7 lead, their largest lead of the game with 6:41 remaining.
  *   Hahn scored at the 5:06 mark, before the Dukes answered to push the lead back to 16-8 with under five minutes remaining.
  *   UF ended the quarter strong, with goals from Monaco (assisted by Hahn) and Hamilton to cut the deficit to 16-10 heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter

  *   The Dukes scored first in the quarter, before the Gators used a 6-0 run to end the quarter in the final 14:48.
  *   Hahn connected at the 9:02 mark, before Isaacson launced a top of the key ripper past the keeper, pulling UF within 17-12. Davies and Hahn scored the next two goals, assisting each other on their finishes, bringing UF within 17-14 at the 5:42 point.
  *   With 4:53 left, Hamilton ripped two left handed snipes past the goalie in the span of 28 seconds, pulling the Gators within 17-16 with 4:25 to play.
  *   After a JMU turnover, Hahn had a free-position opportunity with 2:48 remaining, where she fed Monaco around the crease, whose shot was saved by Moyer, and the Dukes scooping the ground ball.
  *   After a Susan Radebugh save on the following possession, the Gators had one last possession with around a minute left. In a sequence of Hamilton getting called for an offensive foul and the Gators causing a turnover to get it back, Monaco had another shot saved, as time ran out. The Gators came up just short by a score of 17-16.

  *   UF is now 4-3 all-time against the Dukes and 2-1 against them on neutral fields.
  *   Hahn’s 10 points tied a freshman record set on March 17, 2010 by Ashley Bruns and were the most points in a Florida game since May 2, 2019 when Sydney Pirreca recorded 11 points
  *   Clark Hamilton tallied her second five goal game of her career, tying a career high
  *   The Gators had a dominant fourth quarter effort, outscoring the Dukes 6-1, outshooting them 13-3 and putting 12 shots on goal compared to the Dukes three
