2022 Florida Football Postgame Quotes
Billy Napier, Florida Head Coach
No. 14 Oregon State 30, Florida 3
December 17, 2022

Opening statement
“Ton of respect for Coach Smith and Oregon State. They have a really good football team, all three
phases of their football team. Offense, defense, and special teams presented a lot of challenges
today. Obviously got some momentum. Won ten games. A really good group. A well-coached
group. They’ve got some ability and we have nothing but respect for that. We can do much better
as a team, individually, collectively, myself from a leadership standpoint. It is my job to have the team
ready to play and we weren’t as ready to play today as we needed to be. The things that disappoint
me are the penalties, some situational mistakes in the game. Certainly, a lot of things we can do from
a coaching perspective. I do think we hung un there on defense. We didn’t produce much on
offense but I think our defensive players hung in there for a while. I do believe that offensively early
we had some penalties in the fringe, red area, that we had the chance there to maybe create some
points and momentum in the game and we missed out on that. I think certainly we could do more. I
think from my perspective I could do more to help our team. I don’t want to lose sight of a group of
players in that locker room that are going to play for the Gators for the last time. That’s what we have
been doing here the last few minutes, just spending time with that group. I really challenged the
players. We have some unbelievably seniors that played for the last time. Their example, their growth,
the things they have done to help us create a little bit different team dynamic. This is a group that
everything we have asked them to do from a work standpoint has been unbelievable. Just a lot of
great stories with some seniors. Some of which don’t even play and are just on the team. I think this
game is about the people you do it with, the people you coach with, and more importantly the
people you play with and the people you coach. Ton of respect for some of these seniors and what
they have done to help us. We are going to learn from today. That’s the key. It’s fuel for the fire.
Obviously, it causes you to evaluate a ton of different things but hats off to Oregon State. They won
the game today, no question about that.”
On Jack Miller…
“I think Jack showed some grit today when you think about what he was asked to do. Obviously had
the thumb injury at the end of training camp. To get back four or five weeks ago. Really first time to
start and just reps to get ready for this game. Guy hasn’t been taking any two reps for a long time. I
thought he showed some toughness and grit, he made some plays but obviously there are some
things that he can do better. What I think about is what we can maybe do as a staff to help him. The
players around him can play better, he can play better, but more importantly we can coach better.
It is a tough dynamic and one that he took on. His approach, his work ethic, his attitude towards the
opportunity. I think some good and bad. Lot of grit there. Respect the approach he took.”
On penalties…
“I think we will know more when we watch the tape. I don’t know. This is a team where we have
made a lot of improvement. Procedure penalties are things that I think frustrate coaches and
certainly I don’t know if we have had that many the entire season, much less one game. That’s
something we need to take a closer look at and see what we can do to help the players”

On how not having O’Cyrus Torrence may have impacted the offensive line…
“I don’t think it was going to be about that. We lived in third and long today as a result of
inefficiency, missed opportunities, and penalties. When you live in third and long your percentages of
having success are not good and that’s when sacks happen. I think some of that is protection and I
think that it is not always the offensive line. I think everybody contributes. Every player. It could be the
running back, the tight end, the receiver, and certainly the quarter back. Those are team situations
and all players contribute to a sack.”
On if he sees sustained progress late season results…
“Sometimes I think the result doesn’t necessarily show the growth we have observed. I think the
dynamic within our team and our locker room, where we started to where we are at today, the
connection there, the relationship piece. I think our issues on the field are execution specific. You are
always working on the culture part but I do think we made a ton of progress in that area. What I
observed in that locker room compared with some of the things we may have observed when I first
got here is a completely different ball club.”
On how the team grew as the season went on…
“I think today is probably an outlier to some degree. I think we had some momentum there and
some missed opportunities, particular late in the year. I think that is something we have to learn from,
that experience. We are in position after Texas A&M and South Carolina. What did we learn going to
Nashville to play, what did we learn going to Tallahassee to play? Then certainly a quick turnaround
to play the bowl game. I see opportunity. What I am observing in there is a positive for the Gators.
They key is that we learn from those experiences. We have got to. Not only the players but all parts of
our organization. In year one there has been a lot of work that has been done from day one to right
now. We are fortunate in that we are going to get a little bit of a break. We are going to turn the
page and come back and work harder than ever.”

Florida Student-Athletes
No. 14 Oregon State 30, Florida 3

1 Ricky Pearsall, Junior, Wide Receiver

On how the end of the season will fuel the team…
“I think we’ll look back on it and see what we’ve been doing all year long and fighting to the end is
something our team has been doing. You can’t teach effort, and that’s something that’s really
important that we can build off into next year. We have a lot of young guys that are excited to play,
so I think Gator Nation should be excited for the future here and what is yet to come”
On Jack Miller’s performance…
“He’s an Arizona kid, so I’m familiar with him. He’s a smart kid, and went out there with poise and was
comfortable and confident with what he was doing, but like coach said, it was his first start. But I think
he did really well, I’m proud of him.”
On his upcoming decision about returning or going to the draft…
“There’s a lot of aspects that go into it, but I’m still thinking about it and being patient with it. I love
being here and that’s a really important aspect for me and my decision. I love coach and all my
teammates, and I’m proud of these guys.”

9 Gervon Dexter Sr., Sophomore, Defensive Tackle

On the senior class…
“Remembering this senior class, the biggest difference this year was being a great teammate. A lot of
the guys, the seniors, have seen several coaching staffs. Seeing them change and watching them
become leaders for us has just been amazing. They finished it out with us and I really appreciate
them for doing that.”
On Derek Wingo’s performance…
“Wingo is a younger guy that always been a leader. It was great that we had Ventrell the whole
season, just so Wingo could learn behind him. He stepped into the leader role today. He played
through a lot of things and just fought the whole game and showed grit.”
On the emotions of playing for the Gators a final time…
“Yeah, there were a lot of emotions, but I’m mainly just proud of being here. Just seeing the transition
from last year to this year. I’m just proud of it, honestly. I just feel like the senior class and as far as me
leaving as well, we left it better than we got it. That’s been the biggest thing for me and I’m proud.”
On how the program has grown…
“Especially this year, we’ve learned to stay together. We learned to be great teammates. We learned
to be for one. I think a lot of it has been inside the locker room. It’s not half. It’s not offense versus
defense. It’s one big unit and we’re all playing for each other. I think that is the biggest difference I’ve
witnessed being here.”
