BIRMINGHAM. – UAB women’s soccer defender Asha Zuniga is one of 11 Conference USA student-athletes to receive the 2022 Fall Spirit of Service Award, the league announced today.
The award is designed to recognize the league’s student-athletes who contribute to the community through service project efforts, are in good academic standing and through participation in their respective sport.
In her time at UAB, Zuniga has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Bundles of Hope, the Lakeshore Foundation and Feed My Starving Children.
She is a member of UAB’s SAAC where she serves as the lead for the Community Service Committee. Zuniga has been named as a C-USA Academic Medal recipient four times and Commissioner’s Honor Roll honoree while landing on the Dean’s and President’s Lists in each year at UAB.
On the field Zuniga was named the 2022 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. This held true as she was named league’s Defensive Player of the Year and a member of the All-Conference First Team.
Additionally, she was Defensive Player of the Week Aug. 23, Sept. 20 and Oct. 18 as well as a First Team All-Academic selection. The team captain was tied for first in C-USA with three game-winning goals while anchoring a backline that had a GAA of 1.00 overall and 0.40 in C-USA play.
“I’m so thankful for this honor,” said Zuniga. “It’s great to be able to give back to the Birmingham community and represent UAB and the women’s soccer team.”
