UAB Women’s Hosts Charlotte in Breast Cancer Awareness Match


BIRMINGHAM –
 The UAB women’s soccer team looks stay undefeated in conference play on Thursday when Charlotte visits PNC Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:04 p.m. and is the Blazers’ breast cancer awareness match.

UAB LATELY
UAB (7-2-4, 4-0-2 C-USA) is on an eight-match unbeaten streak (5-0-3) dating back to September 1. The Blazers are currently in second place in C-USA with 14 points.

CHARLOTTE LATELY         
Charlotte (3-7-3, 2-3-1 C-USA) is coming off a 1-1 draw against Middle Tennessee on Oct. 6. The 49ers are currently tied for sixth place in C-USA with seven points.

THE SERIES VS. CHARLOTTE
Charlotte leads the all-time series 9-2-1. The teams began the rivalry in the first season of women’s soccer in Conference USA, 1996. The 49ers have never lost in Birmingham, going a perfect 3-0-0.

LAST MATCH VS. CHARLOTTE
A late comeback effort came up short as the UAB women’s soccer team fell to Charlotte 2-1 on Oct. 17, 2019.

COMMON OPPONENTS
UAB and Charlotte have nine common opponents, all in C-USA.

THAT’S TWO FOR ASHA

On Sept. 27, Conference USA announced that Asha Zuniga was the league’s Defensive Player of the Week. This is her second honor this season, as she took home the award on Aug. 17.

A KEEPER WORTH KEEPING
Eve Beyer was named Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 4. In the Blazers’ 1-0 victory at UTEP on Sept. 29, the senior turned away three shots. She followed that with a five save performance on Oct. 2 – including a huge save with three seconds remaining in the match to preserve the 0-0 draw.

CLARK GETS HER FIRST GOAL AND FIRST HONOR
After scoring her first career goal, which was the equalizer in UAB’s 1-1 tie against UTSA,  Hannah Clark was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 11th.

LOOKING TO GET BACK ON TOP
The Blazers are ranked No. 2 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Ranking South Region poll. UAB moved down one spot from last week’s poll.

HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT 
UAB is 17th in the NCAA and first in C-USA with a .550 shot accuracy.

GIMME FIVE 
UAB’s five match winning streak from Sept. 8 to Sept. 29 was the fourth longest in program history.

GREAT EIGHT          
UAB’s eight match unbeaten streak ties the second longest in program history. UAB also went unbeaten in eight straight matches in 1998 and a school record nine straight matches in 2017.

The Blazers finish out the road portion of the season at WKU on Oct. 16 an LA Tech on Oct. 23. The regular season ends on Oct. 29 against Rice at PNC Field for Senior Night.  

UAB TO THE AAC STARTING IN 2022-23
On Thurs., Oct. 21, American Athletic Conference officials announced that Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice and Texas San Antonio will join UAB as new members in the AAC. They will compete against current AAC members East Carolina, Memphis, Navy, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. The UAB women’s soccer team will begin AAC play in the 2023 season.
