BIRMINGHAM – Women’s basketball head coach Randy Norton has announced that former Middle Tennessee wing Amiya Payne has transferred to UAB.
“We are very excited to add Amiya into our program and back home in Birmingham. She is an extremely talented guard that can play and defend multiple positions,” said Norton.
The Trussville native was ranked No. 89 nationally overall by ESPN and No. 13 nationally at her position coming out of Hewitt-Trussvile High School in 2021.
She became the first girls basketball player at Hewitt-Trussville to be named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association Super All-State team when she was so honored in 2020.
Payne is a four-time ASWA all-state player and a two-time Super 5 recipient. She also earned the distinction of Class 7A Player of the Year following a senior season that saw her average 24.1 points per game to go with an average of 7.4 rebounds.
Payne capped off her high school career with 2,420 points scored, 744 rebounds, 217 steals and 203 blocked shots.
“Amiya has a strong work ethic and love for the game and will be a great ambassador for UAB. She will make an immediate impact as we continue to compete for championships on and off the court,” added Norton.
Payne joins Ashton Elley and Desiree Ware as the newest UAB players.
