BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team recorded its 700th program victory after its 69-40 victory over Nicholls on Tuesday night at Bartow Arena.
Kylee Schneringer led all scorers with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting with a career-high six rebounds. Margaret Whitley added 11 points and tied her career-high with eight rebounds. Lyndsey Robson scored 12 points and Molly Moffitt was one point and one rebound short of a double-double with nine-and-nine. Denim DeShields had six points and a game-high six assists for the Blazers who improve to 2-0.
Kyla Hamilton led Nicholls (2-1) with 12 points. Deonna Brister pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
DeShields scored seven seconds into the game and UAB never looked back as they had a second consecutive wire-to-wire victory.
A 3-pointer followed by a layup from Moffit gave the Blazers their first double-digit lead of the game at 14-3 with 7:34 left in the 1st quarter.
Robson’s jumper at 6:15 put UAB ahead 34-13, giving the Blazers its first 20+ point lead of the game. They would take a 41-18 advantage into halftime.
The Blazers kept up the momentum, closing out the 3rd quarter on a 18-4 run to go ahead 59-26.
The lead would get a high as 39 points midway through the 4th quarter on an Ashton Elley layup that made the score 68-29.
“Our defense was dominating. I though we guarded hard tonight,” said head coach Randy Norton.
The Blazers held the Colonels to 20% shooting (14-of-70) and scored 16 points off 14 forced turnovers.
“All in all, I’m pleased to see improvement in different areas we have talked about.”
UAB committed nine turnovers tonight, seven better than 16 against Auburn Montgomery.
The Blazers hit the road to face Valparaiso on Nov. 21 followed by George Mason and LSU in the Bahamas on Nov. 25-26. The next month starts with Western Carolina on Dec. 3. The next home game at Bartow until Dec. 13 against Miles.
