DENTON, Texas – Down 17 points in the 3rd quarter, the UAB women’s basketball team fought back to steal a victory, 76-74 at the Super Pit on Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers (10-8, 2-7 C-USA) scored 56 2nd half points and were led by the backcourt duo of Denim DeShields and Margaret Whitley, who scored 16 points each. Maria Roters recorded a double-double of 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Sara Bershers added 12 points in her second consecutive start.
Aniyah Johnson led the Mean Green (6-12, 3-6 C-USA) with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds.
The first half was not kind UAB. They were 1-of-14 from 3-point range and scored 20 points.
Johnson started off the 3rd quarter with a pair of free throws that made the score 37-20. Then the Blazers began to heat up, making 13-of-20 attempts for 65% including three 3-pointers. They ended the 3rd quarter on a 7-0 run, making the score 57-53 in favorite of the Mean Green.
UAB kept the momentum going and tied the score after back-to-back 3-pointers from Whitley and Sara Bershers which deadlocked the game at 59-59. There would be three more ties and three more lead changes before a Roters layup put the Blazers ahead for good at 3:07. A pair of Whitley free throw with 5.9 seconds iced the contest.
Up next, the Blazers remain on the road to face LA Tech on Jan. 26. The Lady Techsters (11-8, 4-5 C-USA) fell to Middle Tennessee 68-50 earlier this afternoon. The next home game is Jan. 28 versus Rice. This is UAB’s Alumni Day.
