FRISCO, Texas – The UAB women’s basketball team begins its quest for the 2023 Conference USA Championship on Wednesday when it faces North Texas. Tip time at The Star in Frisco, Texas is set for 1:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE 2023 CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP
The 11-team championship begins March 8. The top five seeded teams received a first round bye. Coverage for the first round through semifinal games will be available through ESPN+ with the Championship Final aired on CBS Sports Network on Saturday, March 11 at 4:30 p.m. (CT).

UAB LATELY
UAB (13-16) is the No. 10 seed. The Blazers finished tied for 10th place with Florida Atlantic and earned its seed by winning the tiebreaker over the Owls.

North Texas (11-19) is the No. 7 seed. The Mean Green earned their seed outright.
UAB AND UNT HISTORY
The series began in 2000 as part of the Air Force Classic. In total, the teams have met 17 times, with UNT holding an 10-7 advantage. They have played in the Conference USA Championship once, 2017.
LAST TIME AGAINST UNT
Down 66-50, with 9:33 left in regulation, UAB went on an 14-0 run to make the score 66-64 and had the chance to tie at the midway point of the 4th quarter, but Charlotte would score the next seven points and hold off any rally en route to its 85-79 victory on Dec. 19, 2022.

After being named C-USA Freshman of the Week three times during the regular season, Denim DeShields was named to the All-Freshman team by the league on March 7. DeShields leads the Blazers and is 10th in C-USA in scoring with averaging 12.8 points per game. She had 17 double-figure scoring game, five scoring 20-point or more. Her career-high of 36 points against FIU was the fifth-highest scoring game in C-USA.
MARGE IN CHARGE
Margaret Whitley was named C-USA Second Team All-Conference. She finished the regular season averaging 11.1 points per game. Her 90.8 free throw percentage is first in the league and eighth nationally. She hit 36.1% of her 3-point attempts, which is second in C-USA and her average of 2.2 3-pointers per game ranks third league wide.

On Feb. 9, Whitley became UAB’s all-time leader with 134 games played.
UAB TO THE AAC
American Athletic Conference officials announced that Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, UTSA, Rice and Texas San Antonio will join UAB as new members in the AAC and compete against current AAC members East Carolina, Memphis, Navy, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. The move will be official on July 1, 2023.
