UAB Falls to Rice 86-72

BIRMINGHAM – Tyreek Scott-Grayson scored a career-high 30 points off the bench, but it was Rice who came away with an 86-72 victory over UAB on Thursday night.
 
Scott-Grayson was 12-of-17 from the field for the Blazers (14-10, 5-6 C-USA). Jalen Benjamin added 14 points and had five assists.
 
Rice (11-13, 3-8 C-USA) had six players in double-figures led by Drew Peterson with 17. He had a game-high six assists.
 
Benjamin opened the game’s scoring with a 3-pointer, but Rice answered with eight straight points. Trey Murphy, III’s 3-pointer at 6:23 gave the Owls their first double-digit lead of the game at 34-24. They would extend their lead to 19 points, taking a 48-28 advantage into halftime.
 
Rice’s lead would get as many as 29 points at the 16:30 mark of the second half.
 
Both teams shot 53 percent from the field and each had 31 rebounds. UAB outscored Rice 28-22 in the paint.
 
23 of Scott-Grayson’s 30 points came in the second half as he was 9-for-12 shooting including 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
 
UAB’s next game is Alumni Day on Feb. 8 versus North Texas. Blazer great Aaron Johnson will have his number retired during halftime against the Mean Green.
