UAB Falls to Pepperdine 66-50

MALIBU, Calif. – The UAB women’s basketball team wrapped up its California road trip with a 66-50 setback at Pepperdine on Wednesday afternoon.

Kylee Schneringer led the Blazers (3-2) with a career-high 12 points. Zakyia Weathersby added 11 and Sara Rosenfeldt tied her career mark with 10 rebounds.

The Waves (2-2) had three players in double-figures led by Eve Braslis’ game-high 14 points.

UAB scored the game’s opening basket, but did not hold a lead the rest of the way. After trailing by nine points at 4:52 of the 1st quarter, the Blazers were able to cut the deficit to four points after a pair of Emily Klaczek free throws made the score 21-17 after 10 minutes of play.

Maria Roters opened the 2nd quarter with a layup to get UAB within two points, however a 9-0 run beginning at 6:33 put Pepperdine ahead 36-23 with 1:50 remaining in the half.

The Waves’ lead would get a high as 18 points with 7:23 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Weathersby scored five straight points and Caitlynn Daniels followed with a pair of free throws to trim the Waves’ lead to eight points at 52-44 with 6:54 left in the 4th quarter. However, the Blazers would only convert two field goals the rest of the way.

Pepperdine outscored UAB in the paint, 48-24. The Blazers held the edge on the boards, 41-39.

“Obviously, we are disappointed with our play today,” said head coach Randy Norton. “That’s why we put our team in these situations on the road, against excellent teams to learn, grow and see what we need to improve on. As we told our team, if we can all self-reflect on the things we need to work on, the two losses mean nothing.  It is important to focus on the big picture and get better.”

UAB returns home to Birmingham to host Chattanooga (1-4) on Nov. 29. The Mocs will face Georgia State on Nov. 27 before coming to Bartow Arena.
