BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team returns home to host UNC Asheville for its second weekend series of the season on Friday, welcoming the Bulldogs to the Southside for games divided between Young Memorial Field and Regions Field.
Game one has been bumped up to 3 p.m. on Friday and moved to Young Memorial Field, while games two and three are still scheduled for 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday at Regions Field.
The Blazers (1-3, 0-0 C-USA) come into the series following a tight, 5-3 loss to Jacksonville State on Wednesday after a late push came up just short. Junior Justin Wiley and senior Colton Schultz led the UAB bats as Wiley went 2-for-3 with an RBI from the nine hole while Schultz, now batting .357 on the season and tied for the conference lead in doubles with three, went 2-for-4 with a run scored on the day.
UNC Asheville (0-4, 0-0 Big South) enters the series winless after Wofford took Wednesday’s midweek matchup on a walkoff sacrifice fly, 8-7. The Bulldogs are led by junior infielder Sebastian Dunn at the plate as he currently holds a .438 batting average with seven hits, two doubles and three runs scored. Freshman right hander Ryan Douglas turned in the most successful appearance on the mound thus far for UNC Asheville, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts for a current 3.18 ERA.
The Blazers currently trail the Bulldogs in the all-time series, 1-2. UNC Asheville squeaked by UAB in the last contest, 6-5, taking the lone series between the two in 2007. The Blazers cruised to a win in game two of the series, 11-3.
UAB will begin another full slate next week, heading to Alabama State for a midweek tilt before hosting Miami (Ohio) for a weekend series. The Blazers and Hornets will square off on Feb. 26 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball complex before the Redhawks come south for games Feb. 28-29 at Regions Field and the series finale on March 1 at Young Memorial Field. Live stat and streaming information for each game is available on the UAB baseball schedule page.
