Adam Chaney advances to tomorrow’s final after competing in four 50m freestyle races on Thursday.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Heading into the final days of a highly-competitive 2024 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials, Adam Chaney continued the excitement after being crowned the 50m freestyle champion of both swim-offs that took place on Thursday night inside Lucas Oil Stadium.
Overall, nine Florida swimmers competed on day six: Adam Chaney, Catie Choate, Caeleb Dressel, Macguire McDuff, Mason Laur, JoJo Ramey, Julian Smith, Sean Sullivan and incoming freshman Devin Dilger.

With a finals spot on the line, Caeleb Dressel charged to the wall in 21.61 to record his fastest time in two years. He garnered the top spot in the second heat to advance to tomorrow’s final as the second seed.
Joining him in lane one, Adam Chaney swam a lifetime-best 21.89 to tie with Jonny Kulow from heat two to require a swim off for the last finals spot.

Spoiler alert, the first swim off ended in ANOTHER tie! Chaney was off the blocks first, but Kulow didn’t go away. The two remained in sync and touched the wall in 21.79. The finish marks the Gators all-time best that he set just an hour before.
45 minutes later, the two went head-to-head in their fourth (and hopefully last) 50m free swim of the day. Chaney entered the water in first and was able to hold off Kulow’s final push to crash into the wall in 21.81 to advance to tomorrow’s final.

Seeded eighth in the final’s session, Caleb Maldari came off the first turn in fourth place following his 27.65 split. Competing against the three-time Olympic Trials top-two champions Ryan Murphy and Keaton Jones, Maldari went 1:58.31 to notch seven place.

Racing in the first semi’s heat, Catie Choate entered the water in fifth and went into her first turn with a 30.40 split. She touched the wall in 2:11.57 to finish seventh in her heat and 15th overall.

Current Gators Catie Chaote and JoJo Ramey raced side-by-side in heat eight. Choate came out of the first turn in second, where she remained heading into the final turn. Her last 50-meter split, 34.88, was one second slower than her previous three times, but her 2:11.98 secured her a semifinals spot. She is seeded 14th going into what is considered the fastest semifinals for this event, ever.
Swimming next to her teammate in lane 2, Ramey stayed in the middle of the pack for the majority of the race. She touched the wall in 2:11.95 for 18th overall to grab the second and final semifinals reserve spot.

Caeleb Dressel comfortably advanced to the semifinals after tying for seventh with 22.00. Joining the Paris qualifier is fellow Gator, Adam Chaney. The 2019 World Junior Championships bronze medalist was third off the blocks and touched the wall in 22.26. Chaney placed fifth in his heat and earned the 14th seed heading into the semis.
Coming off his 100m free finals appearance yesterday, Macguire McDuff went 22.36 to finish sixth in his heat and place 21st overall. The 12-time NCAA All-American shaved time off his previous-best 22.42 that he set at the Speedo Atlanta Classic last May.
Julian Smith made his second appearance in Indianapolis and also posted a personal best after touching the wall in 22.42 to claim first in the sixth heat. He reset his previous-best time of 22.61 he logged this past May to place 24th overall.
The newest Gator competing in the event was Deving Dilger, who finished in 22.79. He came close to his personal best, 22.67, that he set in March of this year. Dilger placed sixth in the fifth heat and 45th overall.

Having finished third in the 200m fly last night, Mason Laur looked to secure a semifinals spot in the 200m IM. His 28.41 free split was the second-fastest in heat 11 for a 2:01.40 finish. He placed sixth in his heat and 29th overall.
Sean Sullivan clocked a personal-best after quickly coming to a finish in 2:01.87. The Florida sophomore shaved nearly two seconds off his previous-best 2:03.15 that he set at the Indy Spring Cup in May of 2023 to place 36th overall.
Caleb Maldari was listed to compete in heat seven, but did not start.

Day seven of the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials takes place on Friday, June 21 inside Lucas Oil Stadium. Three roster spots will be solidified in the Men’s 50m free, 200m IM and the women’s 200m back. The men will compete for a semifinals spot in the 100m fly morning, while the women race for a finals spot in the 800m free and a top-16 spot in the 200m IM.

For individual events at the Paris Games, there are two types – Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) and Olympic Consideration TIME (OCT), per World Aquatics. Swimmers who match or better the OQT in one or more individual events, qualify for Olympic competition automatically. Participating countries may enter two (2) athletes in the same event, only if both swimmers’ times are equivalent or under the OQT. The OCT threshold works differently. Should the OQT not yield a quota of 852 total swimmers, “World Aquatics will then invite athletes who have equaled or bettered an OCT, until the total quota of 852 athletes is reached.”

Indoor swimming kicks off July 27 and runs through August 4; in total, 35 medal events will be competed.
