DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers announced that they have acquired OF Mark Canha from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for RHP Blake Holub.
Canha, 34, combined to play in 139 games between New York (NL) and Milwaukee in 2023, hitting .262/.355/.400 with 25 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs and 62 RBI. He ranked as one of the hardest players in baseball to strike out, posting a 15.6% strikeout rate (86th percentile) in addition to a 1.61 K/BB rate (83rd percentile). He also appeared in two games with the Brewers in their NL Wild Card series against Arizona, going 3×8.
A native of San Jose, CA, Canha has played nine Major League seasons, hitting .250/.349/.422 with 156 doubles, 14 triples, 113 home runs and 417 RBI in 924 career games. Canha’s 2023 campaign extended his streak of seasons with an OPS+ over 100 to six (2018-23). Since the start of 2021, Canha ranks tied for 25th among qualified Major League hitters in on-base percentage (93rd percentile). He’s also in the 76th percentile of walk rate and ranks second in the Majors in hit by pitches (72) over that span.
Holub, 25, appeared in 48 games between Single A West Michigan and Double A Erie in 2023, posting a 6-4 record with a 3.03 ERA (65.1IP/22ER) and 76 strikeouts.
