Coral Springs to reopen history museum

On Saturday, July 10, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the City of Coral Springs and Historical Advisory Committee (HAC) invites the public to celebrate our 58th year as a municipal government with the reopening of the Museum of Coral Springs History located inside Mullins Park.

The event kicks-off with a ribbon cutting, followed by tours of the new interactive displays that showcase the rich history of Coral Springs.

Commissioner Joy Carter said, “To finally reopen the museum is such an exciting and memorable way to celebrate our city’s birthday. As a HAC member and city official I am so excited to welcome visitors back to learn about how Coral Springs was established through the use of technology and salvaged items added to the display.”

The Museum of Coral Springs History is a state-recognized historic landmark. In its original form, it was the first building in the city and used as the Coral Ridge Properties (CRP) real estate office. The 20’ x 30’ building was physically moved around town when CRP outgrew it and donated the building for use as the first police station, as various club houses, and a fire training facility. After it caught on fire, it was rescued by a landmark restoration committee and repurposed into the “Mini Museum” in 1978.

The current renovation includes all-new wood flooring, fresh paint, and the installation of a state-of-the-art interactive touchscreen, which was purchased in part thanks to the Department of State Historical Resources grant funding. With limited space in the museum, the touchscreen allows for hands-on learning and exploration of our city’s unique start. The display features digital activities, which will be added to and updated on a regular basis. Modules range from coloring pages for children, a trivia quiz for all ages, and historic neighborhood maps. Inside the museum, features include salvaged items and tributes to past landmarks, including the original red brick City Hall and the recently demolished Financial Plaza.

Coral Springs Police Department is looking for ambassadors

The Coral Springs Police Department is looking for engaged citizens to serve as ambassadors for the newly formed Community Ambassador Program (CAP).

Citizen distrust in law enforcement has increased nationwide over the last year. To prevent that distrust from becoming prevalent in the Coral Springs community, our police department worked to develop CAP. The mission of the program is to engage with ambassadors to build a stronger foundation, develop greater understanding, and improve transparency. As stated by Chief Clyde Parry, “Trust is the bedrock of any relationship. It is important that the public and the police have tough conversations to better understand each other’s point of view. I welcome tough conversations and controversial topics. Having open and honest conversations is the first step to understanding. Understanding leads to transparency and trust. That is what we seek with this program.”

The Coral Springs Police Department recognizes at times there is a misunderstanding or lack of knowledge about how the public perceives policing, and what the police actually do. Knowledge is power, continually improving is paramount to success, and in policing, transparency is key.
The Coral Springs Police Department formed CAP to provide a means for citizen ambassadors to learn more about the police department, engage in timely and controversial topics, increase direct interactions with our citizens, review good police work, and examine our use of force incidents.

CAP will be comprised of up to (16) participants, who meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a resident or owner of a business operating in the City of Coral Springs.
  • Commit to serve as an ambassador for a two-year period.
  • Regularly attend the bi-monthly meetings held at the police department during evening hours (attend at the minimum four of six yearly meetings)
  • Be engaged and willing to discuss all topics, regardless of controversy (no topic is off-limits).
  • Willing to research topics before meetings and submit questions and talking points before each meeting.
  • Share take-a-ways with the community as an ambassador.

Coral Springs Museum of Art holds Mix art event

The chance to create art and meet some new friends brought people together at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. They were part of a new program known as Mix. Those who came could make some art collages using various forms of mixed media. They were encouraged to follow the theme of the featured art, “Reconfigure.” But they mostly had some fun making art and socializing.

“This was a nice event and people had a good time tonight. The people enjoyed making collages,” said Jill Brown, the Museum director.

Sabrina Fajardo won the drawing and loving spending time making art with her friends.  “I had a lot of fun tonight and I enjoyed making some art,” she said.

Mayor Scott Brook came to the event and liked what he saw. “It was good to see people coming together to make some art and have some fun,” he said.

Commissioner Joy Carter participated in the event and had fun. “I enjoyed making some creative art. This was a good community event,” she said.

The Museum hopes to hold a Mix event on the second Wednesday of every month. There will be a wide variety of art activities for people to enjoy.
