BOCA RATON, Fla. – Riley Thompson, a Florida Atlantic University football true freshman, has been named First Team All-American by College Football News, the organization announced today.
Thompson, who handled every punt for the Owls in 2022, the only Owl to record a 2022 punt, tallied 59 punts totaling 2,699 yards for an average of 46.7 yards per punt, which ranks second among all Conference USA punters. The Owls ended the regular season ranked No. 18 nationally with a 41.06 average. Individually, he was 12th nationally with a 45.4 net punting average. His longest punt of the season was a 71 yarder versus UAB, surpassing his previous high of 70. The Aussie booted 15 punts for 50 plus yards and landed 25 inside the 20. Less than one percent (0.05) of Thompson’s punts were touchbacks.
Thompson ended his freshman season sitting atop the Owls’ all-time average yards per punt list with three seasons to play. Opponents averaged only 6.6 return yards on 25 attempts.
