Third Quarter Rally Not Enough in Loss vs. ODU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team (2-5, 0-3 C-USA) dropped its third consecutive game Friday night, falling to Old Dominion (4-3, 1-2 C-USA), 71-56. FAU cut the Monarchs’ lead to five points with 3:30 left in the third, but a 15-0 ODU run silenced the Owls.

HOW IT WAS DECIDED

ODU got started with an 8-0 run in the first three minutes of play followed by a 7-1 run. Sofia Galeron scored the Owls’ first field goal of the night off a reverse layup, as the Owls trailed, 15-3 with 4:07 left in the first. Iggy Allen hit a 3-pointer with the Owls trailing 18-6 with 2:25 left, but the Monarchs finished with a 7-2 run to lead 25-8 after one quarter of play. The Owls shot 23 percent compared to ODU’s 53.

ODU hit a 3-pointer to open up play to extend on an 8-0 run initiated in the first quarter. FAU started to find its shot, with Allen and Rita Pleskevich knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers. The Owls finished the quarter on a 13-8 run capped off by a Galeron 3-pointer and Pleskevich jumper. FAU started to find its way out of the hole they dug in the first quarter, trailing 42-29 at the half.

The Owls began the third quarter to continue on a 22-7 run, as Allen sunk two free throws with 6:06 remaining in the third quarter. Her points cut ODU’s lead to 10, which was the closet the Owls got to the Monarchs since early in the first quarter. The Owls’ defense started to come alive, forcing an ODU shot clock violation with 5:30 left in the frame. Allen capitalized off the Monarchs’ mistake, hitting a jumper, as the Owls trailed 46-38. The graduate student came swinging again, making a second-chance layup with 3:30 remaining in the quarter, as the Owls’ came within five points, 48-43. FAU would then find themselves in a scoring drought for the rest of the quarter, lagging behind the Monarchs, 53-43.

ODU would add onto its 5-0 run initiated in the third quarter to outscore FAU 10-0 in the first five minutes of the final quarter. Allie Tylka then lashed a 3-pointer to break the Owls’ scoring drought of over eight minutes. FAU shot 5-6 from the field late, but ODU would not put its foot off the gas. The Owls would drop its third straight game following a 71-56 defeat to the Monarchs.

GAME NOTES

  • Allen recorded her second double-double of the season after matching a career-high 24 points and adding 14 rebounds. She was 8-21 from the field and tallied four assists and two steals
  • Pleskevich followed with 12 points after going 5-8 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc. The guard tallied her second consecutive double digit scoring performance
  • Galeron did a little bit of everything tonight, notching eight points, a career-high eight rebounds and two blocks
  • Nikola Ozola tied Allen for a team-high in assists with four, which is tied for a season-high
