TODAY’S STARTING PITCHER SANDY ALCANTARA • Sandy Alcantara will make the first Opening Day start of his career tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies. He was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA against Philadelphia in 2019, including 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA at Citizens Bank Park.

• Alcantara finished off the Marlins 2019 season in Philadelphia, earning the win with 6.0 innings allowing eight hits, one run and striking out five. Miami won the game 4-3 and clinched a season-series win over the Phillies.

Saturday, July 25: LHP Caleb Smth (10-11, 4.52 -2019) vs. RHP Zack Wheeler (11-8, 3.96 – 2019) Sunday, July 26: RHP Jose Ureña (4-10, 5.21 – 2019) vs. RHP Vince Velasquez (7-8, 4.91 – 2019)

• Alcantara has his lowest career ERA at Citizens Bank Park, (1.32) of any ballpark he has SO HR 151 23 191 28 MARLINS MINUTE After a 120-day delay to Opening Day, the Miami Marlins will play the first game of a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at Citizens Bank Park to begin the 2020 season. This will be the first time since 2003 that the Marlins open the season against the Phillies and the first time in franchise history that Miami will open up in the City of Brotherly Love. Sandy Alcantara will make the first Opening Day start of his career. He was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA against Philadelphia in 2019, including 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA at Citizens Bank Park.

ON THE ROAD The Marlins finished the 2019 season with a 27-54 record on the road but won seven of their last 15 games away from Marlins Park. This after a Franchise-record 15-game road losing streak from Aug 3-Sept. 1.

PHILADELPHIA PHREEDOM The Marlins went 10-9 vs. the Phillies in 2019 with a 5-5 mark in Philly. It was Miami’s first season-series win since 2008 (10-8). The series win snapped the second-longest active season-series losing streak in MLB, behind the Yankees over the Twins (13).

OPENING DAY STARTER

Sandy Alcantara will make the first Opening Day start of his career tonight after Jose Ureña started the Marlins openers in 2018 and 2019. At 24 years and 321 days old, Alcantara is the youngest Opening Day starter since Jose Fernandez started Opening Day in 2016 at 22. Overall, Alcantara is the sixth youngest Opening Day starter in club history behind Fernandez, Ryan Dempster, Livan Hernandez, Dontrell Willis, and Josh Beckett. Ureña was the first Marlins pitcher to start consecutive Opening Days since Josh Johnson started three in a row from 2010-12. Eight pitchers have started back-to-back Opening Days for the Marlins: Charlie Hough (1993-94), Kevin Brown (1996-97), Alex Fernandez (1999-00), Ryan Dempster (2001-02), Josh Beckett (2003-05), Dontrell Willis (2006-07), Johnson (2010-12), and Ureña (2018-19). Johnson and Beckett are the only two pitchers to start three consecutive Opening Days for Miami.

OPENING DAY ANSWERS The Marlins are 11-16 all-time on Opening Day. They are on a franchise record five-game losing-streak on Opening Day, last enjoying a season-opening victory in 2014 with a 10-1 win over the Colorado Rockies at Marlins Park. The longest Opening Day win-streak was four, running from 1997 to 2000 when Miami defeated the Cubs twice, Mets and Giants. The Marlins have not won back-to-back Opening Days since 2004-05. This is just the eighth time in 28 seasons that Miami will start the season on the road and the first time since 2017. Miami is 1-6 in Opening Days on the road with its only win in 2007, a 9-2 win in Washington.

UNITED NATIONS Miami’s projected Opening Day lineup has five different nationalities represented: United States, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. According to Elias Sports Bureau, it would be the fifth time in franchise history the Marlins have had five different nations represented in the starting lineup for the opener. Also in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2016. Only two teams had at least five nationalities represented in their 2019 Opening Day lineups: Cincinnati (5) and Minnesota (6).

A SPRINT AND AN OPPORTUNITY With a 60-game season, Miami is in a unique position to compete for an NL East title. The Marlins have never spent a day in first place after June 27 in any season in franchise history. The 2004 Marlins were in first place with a 40-35 record, but finished the season in third in the NL East at 83-79. Last season, Miami was 39-63, in fifth place in the division and 21.5 games out of first place with 60 games remaining. The 2016 Marlins had the best 102-game start to a season with a 55-47 record, good for second place, five game back of first. They finished the season 79-82 and in third.

LEAVE THE HITTING TO THE HITTERS The 2020 season will also feature a designated hitter for the first time. The Marlins franchise have played 206 games with the DH with the position hitting .242 with 24 home runs, and 107 RBIs. Jorge Cantu played the most games at DH in a season with nine in 2010. He hit .324 with three homers and five RBIs. On the Marlins current roster, Corey Dickerson has played the most games at DH with 128, hitting .258 with 29 home runs and 70 RBIs. Comparatively, Dickerson is a .295 hitter when playing the outfield. Jesus Aguilar is the only other player on the Marlins 30-man roster who has DHed, hitting .192 in 28 games.

THE ROWSON AND DUNCAN EFFECT The arrival of new Bench Coach and Offensive Coordinator James Rowson and the promotion of Hitting Coach Eric Duncan are already paying dividends. The Marlins hit 24 home runs in 22 Spring Training games, including five in two exhibition games in Atlanta during Summer Camp. This, after the Marlins finished last in Major League Baseball in home runs last season with 146. In 2019, Rowson guided the Twins offense to 307 home runs, the most in Major League history. The club also led the Majors in RBI (906), ranked second in runs (939), hits (1547), average (.270), and slugging percentage (.494). President of Baseball Operations, Michael Hill has done his part as well, acquiring Corey Dickerson (12 home runs in 2019, three 20+ home run seasons), Jesus Aguilar (12 home runs in 2019, 35 home runs in 2018), and Jonathan Villar (24 home runs in 2019).

SO LONG SUMMER CAMP Miami began Summer Camp on Friday, July 3 at Marlins Park and the club’s Player Development complex in Jupiter. Prior to the team activity on July 3, the Marlins team was last on the field together on March 12, in a 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter. The Marlins organization then immediately closed both the Jupiter facility and Marlins Park to all player activity and front office staff transitioned to a remote work policy. Summer Camp concluded on Wednesday with the second of two exhibitions in Atlanta. Miami split their final tune up series winning the second half, 6-2 after falling 10-9 on Tuesday Night. The Marlins collected 28 combined hits and homered five total times in the series.

pitched more than one game in. The NL East has had a tough time against Alcantara with one exception. He owns an ERA under three against the Phillies, Mets, and Braves, totally a 5-4 record. However, he is 0-5 with a 7.66 ERA against the Nationals.

The updated notes reflect the following transactions:
