Swimming – 11 Sharks earn All-SSC Honors

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference announced the 2024-25 All-Sunshine State Conference Swimming teams on Thursday afternoon. The fifth-ranked Nova Southeastern Women’s Swimming team had seven student-athletes recognized, while the eighth-ranked NSU Men’s Swimming team had four student-athletes honored.  

The honorees for the Sharks Women’s Swimming program include four first-team members – May LowyEmilia RonningdalKristina Orban, and Hailey WilliamsIlaria Murzilli was named to the second-team and Zsofia Kurdi and Maya Esparza were named to the third-team.  

Lowy was named to the first-team for the fourth consecutive year, won a pair of individual Sunshine State Conference Championships (200 backstroke; 400 individual medley) and placed second in the 200 individual medley and 200 butterfly. Ronningdal, the 2022-23 Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year, earns her third consecutive first-team All-Sunshine State Conference selection and won a pair of individual SSC championships (200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley) during the championship meet. Orban, a freshman from Malmö, Sweden, was victorious in the 200 freestyle during the Sunshine State Conference championship meet. Williams, a two-time first-team All-SSC honoree, won three SSC individual titles – 1650 freestyle, 500 freestyle, and 1000 freestyle – at the championships.  

Murzilli earned the third All-Sunshine State Conference honor of her career, being recognized to the second-team for the second time. Kurdi and Esparza both were recognized to an All-Sunshine State Conference team for the first time in their careers.  

On the men’s side, Luca Alessandrini became just the seventh men’s swimmer in the history of the Sunshine State Conference to earn three first-team honors in a career. NSU had three representatives on the second-team, with Gustav HenriksenInigo Marina, and Javier Colmenares. Alessandrini won the 1650 freestyle, culminating his illustrious career with six individual SSC championships. Henriksen was named to the second-team for the second consecutive season. Marina, a four-time Sunshine State Conference champion, won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke races at the championship meet. Javier Colmenares earns the first All-SSC honor of his career.  

The Nova Southeastern Swimming programs combined to have 14 student-athletes representing the university at the NCAA Division II National Championships at the IU Natatorium from March 11 – 15th in Indianapolis, IN. For the men’s team, Luca Alessandrini qualified in the 200 butterfly, as well as the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle. Gavin Lindley will represent NSU in the 100 freestyle and Inigo Marina will compete in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.   

The women’s program will have 11 representatives, including Maya Esparza (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Grace Gardner (200 breaststroke), Claire Gass (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke), Maria Goncalves (100 backstroke), Zsofia Kurdi (100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle), May Lowy (200 backstroke, 200 butterfly, 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley), Hannah Montgomery (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke), Ilaria Murzilli (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, 1650 freestyle), Kristina Orban (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle), Emilia Ronningdal (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley) and Hailey Williams (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, 1650 freestyle).
