The Bulls take doubles point but struggle in singles

Tampa, Fla. (April 15, 2023) – No. 59 USF Women’s Tennis started strong but fell to Memphis 4-1. The Bulls came into the match winners of nine of their last 11 and drop to 13-8. Memphis improved to 8-11. The Bulls will now prepare for the American Athletic Conference Championship.
It was a tight battle in the beginning as two of the three doubles matches went to tiebreakers.
The Bulls gutted it out and took doubles point 2-1. On Court 1 Najda Bay-Christians and Marta Falceto-Font fell 4-6. The Bulls evened things up on Court 2 as Laura Pellicer and Ireland Simme won their match 7-6 in a tiebreaker 7-4. The doubles competition came down to the final match on Court 3 in another tiebreaker. Sierra Berry and Cliona Walsh secured the point for the Bulls with a 7-6 win, 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
Memphis bounced back, taking the first three singles matches in straight sets. The final three matches tightened things up. Ireland Simme split her first two sets, 1-6, 6-2. Sierra Berry won her first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker 7-5, Cliona Walsh dropped the first set in a tiebreaker 6-7 (7-1) and was ahead 4-2 in the third. But it was not enough, the match was decided when Simme fell in the third set 4-6 giving Memphis the win.
