South Florida Men’s Soccer Hosts Charlotte Sunday Night

TULSA, Okla. (October 7, 2023) – The University of South Florida men’s soccer (3-6, 1-2) hosts Charlotte (5-2-1, 3-1) at Corbett Stadium on Sunday night at 6:00 p.m. and the match will air live on ESPN+.

SETTING THE STAGE

The Bulls have won two of their last four matches. Jalen Anderson leads USF with 5 goals on the year and Ajmeer Spengler has a team-best four assists. Tulsa has won four of its last five contests.  In their last match, the 49ers lost on the road to SMU, 1-0.

SOUTH FLORIDA-CHARLOTTE SERIES

USF has won 16 of 26 all-time meetings against Charlotte, which extends back to the 1977 season. The Bulls are looking for their 10th home win against the 49ers. South Florida bested Charlotte in the last clash, 2-1 at home (Nov. 11, 2022).

LAST TIME OUT

South Florida bested Tulsa, 2-1, on Thursday (Oct. 5), which marks their first league and road win of the season. Jalen Anderson executed for the Bulls early on, as he scored the first goal of the day off a pass from Oscar Resano just seven minutes into the contest. Tulsa found an opportunity to equalize five minutes later, as Jared Aguilar managed to sneak a shot past USF’s backline. In the second stanza, the match was swung in favor of South Florida. Ajmeer Spengler passed the ball to Resano on the left corner of the box, who handed it off to Anderson.


SCOUTING THE 49ERS

Brandon Morales and Brigham Larsen both lead the team with three goals each. Morales also leads the 49ers with a trio of assists. Leo Stritter has seen six games between the posts with three shutouts on the year.

USF ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME

Alumni Jeff Attinella has been selected as a member of the 2023 USF Athletics Hall of Fame Class and will be inducted on Thurs., Nov. 9. Attinella is one of two student-athletes to receive that honor in USF men’s soccer history. An NSCAA First-Team All-American goalkeeper (2009), a three-time All-Region selection, and three-time Big East All-Conference honoree, earning first-team honors in both in 2009, Attinella played on four NCAA Tournament Teams and helped lead the 2007 team to the NCAA Sweet 16 and the 2008 team to the NCAA Elite Eight.

USF Men’s Soccer competed in the school’s first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3.
