TAMPA (September 1, 2023) – South Florida men’s soccer (0-3) fell to Mercer (2-1), 2-0, at Corbett Stadium on Friday evening.
After a 35-minute weather delay and a silent first half, the visiting Bears found the net twice in the span of four minutes. Mercer’s Carlos Santamaria scored at the 56:23-minute mark, and Omar Hernandez scored in the 60th minute of action.
South Florida owned the advantage in shots (10-8), corner kicks (8-6), and fouls (9-3). Both squads managed to fire off six shots on target.
Tonight’s total attendance was 691, marking the eighth time men’s soccer has seen a crowd of 200-plus since the 2015 season.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- USF’s loss marks its third match in a row that the squad has given up two goals.
- South Florida had three-of-four yellow cards in the match (Nicolas Scargle, Jemone Barclay, and Ajmeer Spenger).
- Mercer collared its first win against the Bulls in the all-time series, but USF leads 5-1.

USF Men’s Soccer competed in the school’s first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3.
