TAMPA, April 28, 2023 – The University of South Florida (28-22, 7-6 ACC)opened their final conference home series with a 5-0 win over the Memphis Tigers (8-37, 2-11 AAC) on Friday afternoon.
South Florida wasted no time offensively, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Meghan Sheehan (Forrest Hills, Md.) and Marissa Trivelpiece (Sugarloaf, Pa.) both had RBI singles in the first inning.
In the following inning, Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel) got on base with a single to left field. One batter later, Sheehan reached on a fielder’s choice. Vivian Ponn (Fort Myers) cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the center field wall.
The Bulls turned two double plays in the game, one by pitcher Gabriella Nori. With a runner on first, Nori caught a shallow pop bunt and threw the runner out on first. Nori pitched five innings and struck out four batters. Ponn pitched the final two innings, not allowing a single walk.
NOTABLES
- The Bulls now have eight shutouts this season with three coming in conference play.
- Kadlub and Ponn led with two hits.
- Ponn is now tied with Trivelpiece with six homeruns this season.
- This is the 10th time this season the Bulls have allowed zero walks.
Up Next
Due to the threat of inclement weather, the Bulls and Tigers will play the second game of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. The softball team will still honor the 2023 senior class prior to the game.
