BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – SMU was the top team in round one of the 2024 American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship on Monday at Southern Hills Plantation Club. The Mustangs fired a team score of 10-under 278 to take a one-stroke lead following the opening 18 holes. East Carolina is one stroke back, shooting nine-under 279 in the first round.
The average score on the first day of play at Southern Hills Plantation Club was 73.47 over the 60 completed rounds. A total of 22 of the 60 players in action in round one finished at par or better, including 17 under par showings.
SMU, the top seed in the tournament, saw three of their four scorers finish under par for a team score of 10-under 278. Mackenzie Lee led the pack with 5-under 67, the second-best score of the day. Emily Odwin and Ellie Szeryk both shot 3-under 69 in the opening round.
East Carolina was led in the first round by Dannielle Modder who shot 5-under 67 to match Lee’s score. Nicole Nash and Oda Sofie Kilsti both shot 2-under 70, while Macie Burcham was par for the course.
South Florida enters round two in third place with a team score of 7-under 281, led by Alizee Vidal’s 4-under68. Emma Falcher was just behind Vidal, shooting a 3-under 69. Melanie Green finished the round one shot under par, shooting 71.
In fourth place, UTSA shot a combined 6-under 282 and was led by the best individual performance of the round as Daniela Abonce shot 6-under 66 to open the tournament. Camryn Carreon finished the round at 3-under 69, while Olivia Williams shot one shot under par at 71.
Tulsa rounds out the top five heading into the second day of competition with a team score of 5-under 283. Lovisa Gunnar shot 4-under 68 to lead the Golden Hurricane. Sydney Seigel shot 2-under 70, while Jenni Roller shot even par in the opening round.
Teams will resume the second round of the 2024 American Women’s Golf Championship on Tuesday with tee times expected to begin at 8 a.m. (ET).
