S&D: Pellacani National Runner-Up, Three Hurricanes Named All-Americans

Pellacani, Vallée, Carvalho all impress at NCAA Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – A night after earning her first NCAA national championship, Chiara Pellacani finished as the national runner-up on the 3-meter springboard on her second day of competition at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

Both Pellacani, who was second with 387.60 points, and Mia Vallée – who was fourth with 371.95 points – picked up their second NCAA All-America honors in as many days with another impressive day at the Weyerhaueser Aquatic Center.

Pellacani opened her trip to Federal Way, Wash., with a first-place finish in the 1-meter on Thursday night to become the 17th Hurricane to win a national title. On Friday, both veteran divers were among the eight qualifiers for the night’s finals for the second straight event.

In addition to Pellacani and Vallée, three Hurricanes swimmers were in action, highlighted by a second straight Honorable Mention All-America finish from Giulia Carvalho.

Carvalho earned her second major honor of the week, this time in the 100-yard butterfly. The standout senior from Brazil – who finished 11th nationally in the 50-yard freestyle Thursday night – took 12th in the night’s finals of the 100-yard butterfly (51.15).

Freshman Ashlyn Massey also competed in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a preliminary time of 52.28. Carvalho secured her spot in the consolation final with a time of 50.91 in the morning’s preliminary round.

In addition to Carvalho and Massey, freshman Simoné Moll competed in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.10) in her first ever trip to the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

The Hurricanes conclude their postseason run on Saturday in Washington.
