S&D: Carvalho, Shuppert Punch Tickets to NCAA Championships

Hurricanes will send two swimmers to postseason for second straight year

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –
For the second straight year, two swimmers from the University of Miami will be representing the Hurricanes in the NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships.

Junior Giulia Carvalho and senior Emma Shuppert were announced Wednesday among the field of qualifiers for the final collegiate meet of the season. A total of 322 participants (281 swimmers and 41 divers) will compete in the 2024 championships.

Carvalho’s performance in the 100-yard butterfly put her in the field for the first time in her career, while Shuppert – who transferred to Miami from Duke, where she qualified for NCAA Championships multiple times – earned a return trip to the NCAA postseason in the 100-yard backstroke.

Carvalho had the 21st-best postseason placement time in her event, while Shuppert was 36th.

Both swimmers were among Miami’s top performers at the ACC Swimming & Diving Championships, where the Hurricanes finished with the seventh-most swimming points over the course of the event.

Zorry Mason and Tara Vovk were Miami’s swimming qualifiers for the 2023 NCAA Championships.

In addition to Carvalho and Shuppert, men’s divers Brodie Scapens and Mohamed Farouk look to earn return trips to the NCAA Men’s Championships when Zone B qualifying begins next week in Athens, Ga., at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.

The women’s NCAA Championships will also be held at the Gabrielsen Natatorium from March 20-23. ESPN+ will provide live digital coverage for preliminary and finals sessions Wednesday through Saturday. Tape-delayed coverage of the women’s championships will be on ESPNU at 7 p.m. Eastern time, Wednesday, March 27.
