BOCA RATON, Fla. – Conference USA has named outfielder Nolan Schanuel and pitcher Hunter Cooley to its preseason all-conference team, the league announced on Thursday. Schanuel was also selected as the Preseason Conference Player of the Year.
Thursday’s announcement caps off a busy winter for Schanuel. The third-year slugger has been named as a Preseason All-American by five different major publications: Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Baseball America (first team), Perfect Game USA (first team), and D1Baseball.com. Perfect Game also selected Schanuel as Conference USA’s top prospect for the 2023 MLB Draft.
For Cooley, this is the second straight year of preseason C-USA honors. The Vero Beach product was also a member of the preseason all-conference team in 2022. Cooley made 15 starts last season, finishing with an 8-4 record and a 4.67 ERA in 104 innings. He struck out 79 and walked just 17.
The preseason coaches’ poll was also released on Thursday. The Owls have been picked third behind defending C-USA tournament champion Louisiana Tech and league newcomer Dallas Baptist.
