SB: South Florida Sweeps Tulsa with Second Straight Walkoff

TAMPA, April 8, 2023 – The University of South Florida (25-18, 6-3 ACC)softball team scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (16-20, 2-4 AAC)in the series finale on Saturday morning.  

South Florida felt the pressure going into the bottom of the seventh inning, trailing 1-4. Alexa Galligani (White Plains, N.Y.) and Hallie Bryant (Trenton) got on base with a walk and a single. Back-to-back singles up the middle from Megan Pierro (Lutz) and Emilee Hanlon (Dunkirk, N.Y.) brought one run home and kept the bases loaded.  

Kathy Garcia-Soto (Tampa) and Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hills, Md.) brought two more runs home to tie the game with a sacrifice fly and a single up the middle. Junior Rian Eigenmann (Millville, N.J.) pinch hit, and with a single to the shortstop, brought the winning run home.    

The Bulls didn’t get their first hit until the fifth inning when Marissa Trivelpiece (Sugarloaf, Pa.) stepped up to the plate. After watching two pitches, she hit her fourth homerun over the right-field wall. She cut Tulsa’s lead to three runs.  

Tulsa’s four runs came in the top half of the fifth. One on a sacrifice fly and then a three-run home run.  

Gabriella Nori (Weston) pitched five innings and struck out four batters. Vivian Ponn (Fort Meyers) pitched the remainder of the game, striking out one. She earned her second win of the season.  

NOTABLES 

  • Megan Pierro was the only Bulls with a multi-hit performance.  
  • This is the second straight walk off for the Bulls.  
  • Pierro and Garcia-Soto led with three assists.  
  • Lydia Castro (Lithia) led the team with five putouts.  

Up Next 

South Florida will head to DeLand for a midweek double header with the Stetson Hatters on Wednesday, April 12. The first game will start at 4 p.m.
