Red Wings/Penguins

DETROIT – Madison Bowey had never scored an overtime goal in the NHL –

until Sunday afternoon.

Bowey one-timed a pass from Dylan Larkin past Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender

Tristan Jarry to give the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 overtime victory at Little Caesars

Arena, improving their pre-season record to 2-1-1.

It’s Bowey’s aim to earn a permanent role on the Red Wings this season after

spending the first portion of his young career bouncing between the NHL and minors.

“I think you used in this camp we had a lot of great young players and there’s

going to be a lot of competition,” he said. “The big focus will be for everyone to step

up to have that ice time and earn the minutes you deserve; I’m focused on playing a

solid two-way game.”

The Red Wings also got goals from Tyler Bertuzzi and Anthony Mantha,

while Pittsburgh got goals from Brian Dumoulin and Jared McCann.

The Red Wings were back on their heels for much of the first period before

eventually gaining several scoring chances, including a Dylan Larkin breakaway

that goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped with the blocker.

“No comment on that one,” Larkin sheepishly said with a smile.

It was Larkin’s first game of the pre-season after missing the first three

with a nagging lower body injury.

“He looked better and better as the game went along,” head coach Jeff

Blashill said. “He practiced so hard and it doesn’t surprise me that he was able

hit the ground running without playing much before this, but it was good to

have him back out there.

One player who will be looking to make a lasting impression on the

Red Wings coaching staff and management is defenseman Dennis Cholowski,

who earned a spot in Blashill’s doghouse last season after making the team out

of training camp but eventually being sent down to the minors. And so far, it

seems as though Blashill has liked what Cholowski has provided in the young

pre-season.

“I think he played very well,” Blashill said. “I think Dennis has been sharp

moving the puck and more physically engaged…he’s had a really good start to

this pre-season. He spent a couple summers here really working and putting the

work in, and has put himself in good position after two games and needs to keep

it going.”
